Federal Loans

• Federal Loans remain in school deferment status while students are enrolled in six or more credits in an eligible degree program.
• Federal Direct Subsidized Loans do not accrue interest while you are in school. Federal Unsubsidized, Private and Plus Loans accrue interest throughout the life of the loan.
• Once you drop below six credits, graduate, or withdraw from school, you will enter a six-month grace period before repayment begins.
• Every student is assigned a loan servicer who will contact you during school and your grace period to prepare you for repayment. First loan payments are generally due one month after the grace period ends. Find a list of federal loan servicers at

Federal Direct Loan History

• Check your Federal Direct Loan History using My Federal Student Aid at .
• Log in using your FSA ID. You will see a list of your federal loans borrowed to date. Click on the number next to each loan to find the interest rate, loan status and contact information for the company servicing the loan.

Why it’s important to complete Exit Counseling
Exit counseling is an online tutorial that reviews your loan terms. You can review your loan details and repayment plans and update your contact information. You will receive emails from the school if you need to complete loan exit counseling. This usually happens right before you graduate or just after you drop below half-time enrollment.

Federal Direct Loans
Use the Federal Student Aid to review repayment plan options and find your best monthly payment. Then, choose one that suits your financial situation. Work with your loan servicer to get the plan set up before your first payment is due.

Federal Direct Loan Forgiveness Programs
The U.S. Department of Education offers two loan forgiveness programs to encourage borrowers to enter full-time public service or teach in certain high-need areas in high-need subjects.

Consolidated Loans

• A consolidation loan combines multiple loans into one large loan. Learn more at
• Federal subsidized, unsubsidized, GradPLUS and Perkins loans can be consolidated.
• Institutional and private loans can NOT be consolidated.
• Consolidation extends the payment period up to 25 years, depending on the amount you owe.
• A new interest rate is calculated and based on a weighted average of all loans put into consolidation.
• Your grace period ends once the consolidation is final. Complete consolidation near the end of your grace period, if possible.
• Subsidized Direct Loan and Perkins loans will begin to accrue interest once you consolidate them. Complete consolidation near the end of your grace period, if possible.

Return to Title IV Calculations

• Students eligible to receive federal financial aid (Pell Grants, Direct Loans or Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants) and withdraw from all courses before 60% of the term has elapsed may owe a portion of the federal financial aid disbursed. For example, if a student withdraws after completing 25% of the term, then they have earned 25% of their federal financial aid for the term and must return the remaining 75%.
• All balances must be paid before enrolling in subsequent terms.
• We strongly encourage students to meet with their Academic Advisor and the Financial Aid Office to discuss the implications of withdrawing.

Withdrawal

• Any courses needing to be withdrawn after the drop/refund deadlines must be completed in writing.
• Withdrawing from a class can affect a student’s academic record, including their financial aid, enrollment status, veteran benefits or the amount owed to the institution if they are past the refund date.
• Before withdrawing from a course, a student is required to contact their assigned Academic Advisor before the withdrawal can be processed. Advisors will assist students via appointment or email at advising@kish.edu.

Aid
Students can only receive federal and state aid from one institution at a time. If you are leaving Kish and planning to attend another school, it is your responsibility to inform the Financial Aid Office.
